A NEW campaign has been launched to entice more people to visit Yorkshire this year.
Yorkshire’s Great Outdoors is fronted by world-class climber Alan Hinkes, from Northallerton, who has climbed the world’s 14 highest mountains.
The campaign, organised by the Welcome To Yorkshire tourist board in association with the National Trust, aims to boost the county’s tourism industry, which is currently worth a reported £7bn
annually.
It is encouraging hikers to visit and take part in a number of activities.
Mr Hinkes said “Yorkshire has everything for the outdoors, it’s where my outdoor experiences began. You can climb and walk on the hills and cave and pothole under them. There’s canoeing, kayaking,
mountain biking, sailing and surfing: the list is endless.
“This campaign is a great way of showcasing what outdoor activities can be done in Yorkshire – even indoor climbing walls – while promoting health, fitness and wellbeing.”
The campaign group is at the Outdoors Show London as part of ExCel London .
Meanwhile, York’s tourism agency has launched a nationwide search using Facebook and Twitter to find Britain’s favourite York experience.
The People’s Choice award will be presented along with 12 other awards at the Visit York Tourism Awards on April 6.
Gillian Cruddas, Visit York chief executive, said: “The annual York Tourism Awards reflect the high quality of customer care given to our city’s seven million visitors. This year we wanted to offer
the public the opportunity to have their say. We will be using Twitter and Facebook to encourage a lively debate on the nation’s favourite York experience and we hope everyone will get involved and
let us know what makes a visit to York special for them. We’re excited to see what people say.”
The 14th York Tourism Awards also include new categories Best Pub/Bar and Employee of the Year The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, reigning Tourism Ambassador for York, has nominated a visit
to York Minster as his favourite city experience.
He said the minster “speaks of the glory of God, and the creative imagination of human beings.”
“It is a magnificent building which brings joy to so many people, worshippers, visitors and York residents alike, he said.
Nominations for the People’s Choice award can be made at visityork.org, facebook.com/visityork or twitter.com/visityork or by collecting a form from the Visit York Information Centre at 1 Museum Street.
