One of the best of Yorkshire is not a roller coaster ride thriller Flamingoland or Lightwater Valley, sledding Xscape complex, or even hang-gliding from Sutton Bank.
Thousands walk up Ingleborough every year to admire the beautiful scenery of the Yorkshire Dales, but beneath their feet is a wonder of Yorkshire – Gaping Gill – and only a few hundred people each year the opportunity to make the trip of a lifetime in the earth.
Twice a year, the local caving club to take the public down, and you can not get much more exciting experience for £ 10.
Safe place like a roller coaster ride, I landed in a rainy and windy days and the metal cage as the boatswain’s chair attached to the cable winch steel cable and a separate security had passed all
health and stringent security controls.
You do not grasp the sides of Chai, but I did – and I bet many others do!
The ground is literally taken away from you on the platform and scaffolding plank above the entrance of the throat and you’re standing speed.
The walls are so close to the touch, and then when no longer exists and it drops more than 330 feet in the darkness of the unknown.
The descent takes less than a couple of minutes, but can feel much, much longer to reach the floor of the cave, where the arms of welcome to volunteer cavers to go to safety.
Relief washed over me and then after a quick disconnect, I walked to wait for a guide, and excited to finally take the vastness, where I was.
Australians are proud of Ayres Rock is so great, is the single largest solid rock worldwide. American could answer, the Grand Canyon, his country was a hole big enough to swallow.
It occurred to me that when I arrived at the stone floor of Gaping Gill. I imagined people in the valley is very proud of York Minster is enormous, the largest Gothic cathedral north
Europe. top of the tower is 197ft to the ground, on the west front of the east window is 518ft and 249ft transects span – the number of 140 000 cubic meters.
But Dalesmen can match.
The main objective is Gaping Gill is 384ft deep with sinking Beck fell all the way to a spectacular waterfall. Britain becomes the highest uninterrupted waterfall.
The room is 446ft long and 151ft range and volume is the large cathedral. All this under the earth, a few meters from the busy road up Ingleborough.
Although the cathedral is so impressive, it is relatively easy for the human eye and brain to keep it all inside But Gill my mouth open, its extraordinary scope and the fact that it is difficult to explain everything
means that it is difficult to comprehend its immensity.
And then there’s the sound.
On a rainy day, the roaring waterfall, a white foam that covers the entire aerosol. Our guide pointed out the scum of the high water mark on the wall of the cave – the cave is too
Gill open word for small. This has been since the morning. I was happy that we got in late afternoon.
A large area is illuminated, but some benchmarks, it is difficult to assess how big it is. Our guide will take you around and tells the story of geology and
hole and a half and then you can walk on your own until you want to go back and join the queue to return back to the sunlight.
Beyond the main cave passages are many, but only experienced cavers should not be for security reasons.
The easiest way to get to the entrance is a four-kilometer, 90-minute walk cons Clapham, where there are lots of facilities to store until the day – and throughout – the hills.
If you have to wait a bit ‘, there is nowhere better to enjoy its stunning scenery and views over the beautiful day, making a difference.
